1970 - US National Guard Kills Four at Kent State

On May 4, 1970, four Kent State University students were killed and nine students wounded by US National Guardsmen in response to protests and demonstrations against the Vietnam War.  A CNN report (MIRROR) takes you to an eyewitness account of the events on May 4, 1970.  (The eyewitness is John Filo whose photograph appears on the right.)

Memorial services were held for the victims for the next five years after which the Kent State University administration stopped their sponsorship and support saying memorial services were "no longer needed."  Kent State officials declared that it had been "long enough" to grieve for these students, so a May Fourth Task Force was formed in 1975 to "raise the level of awareness of students, faculty, and the general public about the May 1970 shootings and the history of subsequent related events."  Through these efforts, in part, permanent memorials were erected and dedicated on the sites where the students died a full twenty-nine years after their deaths.

The Kent State University Library now contains the most complete record of the terrible events of May 4, 1970.

An audio interview with John Filo about his memories of the events of May 4 and the circumstances leading to this photograph and its publication is available HERE. (This page contains a link to an audio WAV file.  An MP3 download of the same interview is available HERE.)

Finally, Wikipedia now contains both summaries of the events of the Kent State Shootings, plus over seventy links to primary source materials for in-depth research into what really happened on May 4, 1970.  See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_State_shootings.

1981 - Bobby Sands Dies on Day 66 of Hunger Strike

Bobby Sands, dedicated to ending British rule in Ireland and dedicated to an independent Irish republic, dies in prison on the 66th day of a hunger strike.  Sands' parents, a brother, and a sister were at his bedside when he died.  It is said that several days before his death, Bobby Sands made his parents promise they would not ask the doctors to put him on life-support when he lapsed into unconsciousness.

Bobby Sands was the first of ten to die on hunger strikes during the summer of 1981.

The Irish Hungerstrikes, a Commerative Project, is a tribute to the ten young men who gave their lives on hungerstrike.
