1962 - We Choose to Go to the Moon

On this day in 1962, President John F. Kennedy delivered his "We Choose to Go to the Moon" speech at Rice University in Houston, Texas. The text of Kennedy's speech is online at The History Place, and the site contains a link to a RealAudio file of the speech as well.

WARNING: It is not possible to listen to this speech and walk away without a sense of profound loss--the loss of great dreams, creative projects, and inspiring leadership. For those too young to remember this speech, ask your parents or grandparents if those were not wondrous days.

Finally, after listening to the speech, come back to take a ten-question True/False quiz HERE to see if you were really listening! You will see your score immediately.

So sit back and relax, allow yourself to be transported back to the early days of the space age, and enjoy this motivating speech!

1993 - Arafat and Rabin Sign Peace Agreement

Israel and the Palestinian Liberation Organization reached an historic peace accord on September 13, 1993, following weeks of secret negotiations. The long-time foes agreed to recognize each other's legitimacy and to set measures in motion that would allow interim self-government to Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied Gaza Strip and the West Bank.  The text of the accord is HERE.

Rabin was later assassinated by "a Jewish man in his mid-20s, allegedly affiliated with right-wing extremist groups" on November 4, 1995.  That report is HERE.
