Advanced Composition for Non-Native Speakers of English

Plagiarism

The purpose of this page is to identify various easy essay sites that have plagiarized essays from this site, Advanced Composition for Non-Native Speakers of English.  First, however, I would like to say that all model essays that appear in this site are by my past and present English Composition students, and that all students whose essays appear on these pages have given written permission allowing publication of their essays within this site.

Second, all students' model essays appearing in this site are final copies, which means I have students' rough drafts and original grades leading to the final essays appearing in this site.  In other words, it is easy to establish the true origin of these essays.

Recently, I discovered my students' essays appearing in other sites, namely term paper sites or easy essay commercial sites at prices ranging from $9.95 to $79.95 depending on how quickly a client needs a paper or the length of time a client wishes to subscribe to the essay factory site.

I had no idea the plagiarism among these easy essay sites was so pervasive, but to illustrate how a single essay gets copy/pasted from this site to other sites all over the internet, consider one of my long time favorite essays, Cows and Whales, an essay by a Japanese student who wrote the essay when I was teaching in the US.  The student was a high-intermediate English student at the university level, and when I first saw his title, Cows and Whales, I thought his topic strange, but after I read the essay, I enjoyed the opportunity to see this topic from a Japanese perspective.  As it is now, a Google search of the first sentence of his essay, "There are some things that happen to cows and whales," yields 110 hits.  The first hit goes to his original essay in this site, but after that, most hits seem to go to "term paper" sites, and here I will explore just one.

There are more horses' asses in the world than horses.

The Cows and Whales essay is at V.I.P. Essay where you can see only the first and last 75 words (mirror).  Only by registering at $9.95 a month to $84.00 a year (mirror) can you see the entire essay.  This is completely bad, but it gets worse!  V.I.P. Essay's disclaimer on the registration page states

Disclaimer: All pre-written papers are intended for the sole purpose of research and examplary [sic] purposes only. We encourage you to use our term papers as a research and study aid only. Plagiarism is a crime, and we do not condone such behavior. Please use our material responsibly, and avoid academic fraud.

What they say, however, does not stand up to scrutiny:  "We encourage you to use our term papers," but Cows and Whales is not theirs!  They say "Plagiarism is a crime," yet they are presenting Cows and Whales as theirs which is plagiarism defined.  They say they "do not condone such behavior" while they are in fact embracing it.

This is but one example of plagiarism.  While it would be impossible to document and comment about all the essays from this site plagiarized in the easy essay term paper sites, I will comment about two sites that have plagiarized another student's essay, The Effects of Living in a Foreign Country.  Of this essay, the first 100 words appear (mirror) on 123 School Work with their copyright notice:

All Papers Are For Research And Reference Purposes Only!  You may not turn these papers in as your own! You must cite our web site as your source!  Copyright 2003-2006  123schoolwork.com.  All rights reserved.

As in the previous example above, 123 School Work admonishes its users to cite their website as the source which they failed to do when they copy/pasted Effects of Living in a Foreign Country from this site to theirs!

Now, however, the narrative gets even more interesting and complicated.  I could not get a single link within the 123 School Work site.  A click on "Essay Menu - Choose Your Topic," however, leads to a different site, RAD Essays which contains the first 100 words (mirror) of Effects of Living in a Foreign Country.  But to see the essay complete at RAD Essays, the cost ranges from $19.95 to $59.95, the cost of a 30 day or a 180 day membership.  Interestingly, Rad Essays also has its acceptable use policy (mirror) too:

The papers contained within our web site are for research purposes only!  You may not turn in our papers as your own work!  You must cite our website as your source!  Turning in a paper from our web site as your own is plagiarism and is illegal!

By now the message is obvious; is it not?  The Effects of Living in a Foreign Country is not RAD Essays' paper.  The act of copying and pasting The Effects of Living in a Foreign Country from this site to theirs is plagiarism and illegal exactly as RAD Essay states in their acceptable use policy.

That these easy essay commercial term paper sites (1) scour the internet gathering essays, (2) plagiarize with no compunction, (3) claim the essays as the theirs, (4) admonish their clients to cite their sites as the source, and (5) warn their clients not to plagiarize is absurd.
